End Perpetual Property Taxes and Restore True Homeownership

A couple stands arm in arm looking at their home, symbolizing the dream of true homeownership free from perpetual property taxes.Owning a home has long been a cornerstone of the American Dream. Yet for too many families, that dream is slipping away. Property taxes—once meant as a fair contribution to community services—have morphed into a system of endless rent payments to the government. Even after decades of work, sacrifice, and payments, homeowners never truly own their homes outright and free from debt.

Imagine a retired couple in their seventies who bought their home in 1980. They’ve paid property taxes faithfully for over 40 years—tens of thousands of dollars on top of their mortgage. Yet, on a fixed income, they now face rising property tax bills that threaten to push them out of the very home they spent their lives paying for. This isn’t just unfair—it’s un-American.

That’s why I’m proposing the Property Tax Freedom Act. Its purpose is simple: to protect the rights of American homeowners by phasing out property taxes for long-term owners and senior citizens.

The Property Tax Freedom Act sets a fair standard:

  • After 30 years of ownership, your primary residence would be fully exempt from property taxes.
  • Seniors age 65 and older would likewise be exempt.
  • Secondary residences would see phased reductions, with one property eligible for exemption at retirement.
  • State and local governments would remain accountable by adjusting budgets, cutting waste, and prioritizing essential services.

The right to own property is fundamental to liberty, independence, and family stability. Current property tax laws undermine that right, forcing citizens to rent their homes from their country, municipality, school, or special use district. Ending perpetual taxation means protecting seniors, encouraging affordable housing, and preserving intergenerational wealth for families who have already done their part.

This reform isn’t about shirking responsibility. It’s about fairness. Homeowners who have contributed faithfully for decades deserve the security of knowing their homes can’t be taxed away in retirement.
The end goal is clear: a path toward the eventual abolition of property taxes nationwide, where Americans who have paid their share can finally hold the title to their homes free and clear.

This isn’t just about tax relief today, it’s about tomorrow. By breaking the cycle of never-ending property taxation, we can keep the dream of homeownership alive for future generations.

It’s time to tell the government: enough is enough. Once you’ve paid your dues, your home should be yours—forever.
